Summary :
The social economy or third sector in Germany is still a widely unknown territory. On the one hand, the sector is challenged with high expectations of integrating socially excluded people, creating new and additional jobs as well as involving citizens in a more democratic way. On the other hand, there is no adequate evidence from empirical research which could verify, differentiate or falsify these expectations.
